Understanding Jeep's Legendary Status in the Off-Road World

Last updated 9 months ago

The word “Jeep” has come to define the entire class of SUVs. The Jeep brand has grown significantly since it began over 50 years ago, but its mission remains the same: to build all-terrain cars that are unbeatable when faced with an off-road adventure. To learn more about why Jeep is the new or used car to have if you want to experience true off-roading, continue reading.

Military Roots

Jeep’s beginnings go back to when it was a rugged brand of all-terrain cars made for the U.S. Army during World War II. It wasn’t until halfway through the 1940s that Jeep released its first production car, the CJ-2A. Although it had some of the features offered on the military-grade Jeeps, this vehicle featured lots of amenities targeted more toward construction workers and farmers, like a tailgate and an external fuel cap.

The World’s First Automatic Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive

During the 1970s, Jeep revolutionized the market for off-road cars when they released the Quadra-Trac automatic full-time 4WD system. Quadra-Trac was an extremely useful feature during the 1970s for many Americas and further increased Jeep’s reputation for off-road prowess.

Debut into Luxury

Jeep realized that, among its loyal base of customers, many wanted to go off-roading in a capable car luxurious enough to drive on the pavement as well. This is why Jeep came out with the Grand Cherokee, a car that could be equipped with heated leather seats, navigation, a premium stereo, a sunroof, and a suspension that delivers a smooth ride on pavement.
